Program Outcomes:

Communication Competence

Learners will become effective communicators in their discipline.

When I first began my education at South Piedmont Community College I was just sixteen. I had never experienced a workload quite like that before; however, when I began that first semester in 2020 English 112 was one of my first classes. This class was a challenge for me in the beginning. I had never written a paper for a college class. This was a daunting task for me, but through many hours spent writing outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts I learned to love writing. My paper on Lighting Pollution was the first final draft I submitted at South Piedmont. As I reflect on the paper I am astounded to see how my writing style has changed over the years at South Piedmont. As my writing style has evolved I appreciate the way I am able to refer back to the papers from this class and see the root of how I write. Personally, this paper showcases my writing abilities as a student. To this day, research papers have been the assignments I enjoy the most and I feel confident in my capability to communicate. I have learned the importance of communicating information with accuracy and clearly. The Lighting Pollution paper showcases how I communicate information thoroughly when it comes to any topic. This achievement is a necessity when it comes to accomplishing an Associates in Art. I am thankful to South Piedmont for pushing me to my limits during my first semester and exceeding them. This paper is an evident piece of my achievements during my time at South Piedmont.

Understanding the Arts and the Human Experience:

Leaners will demonstrate an understanding of Arts and Humanities in historical and cultural contexts.

When I set out to achieve my Associate in Arts in the Fall of 2020, I was unsure of my end direction. I have learned how to navigate my future education as I complete my degree. One of the biggest takeaways from my education at South Piedmont was the insight I gained about Art culture. The Art world has always been one of my most significant educational focuses. I believe that much influence on art cultures reflects the collective worldview of specific times and cultures. This has been proven to me through my rigorous education in the art world during my time at the college. Through classes such as Art Appreciation, Art History, and Drawing, I have learned all the different aspects of the art world. Not only has my knowledge of the art world expanded, but also my understanding of the creators has grown. Understanding the meaning behind something deemed creative and beautiful introduces a world in which education has no bounds. This has become my passion as a student at South Piedmont. My research papers giving artistic analysis' on works of art have given me the opportunity to showcase my ability to comprehend artists and their works. Specifically, my final research paper on the infamous artist Edgar Degas. The paper details the life of Degas, his artworks, and his impact on the art world. Through the research of this assignment, I understood more about the artist himself, and this led to a better comprehension of what his artwork meant to him. This research paper is evidence of my growth as a student at South Piedmont, as well as my ability to comprehend the human experience and the impact that it has on the art world.

Social Scientific Literacy:

Leaners will demonstrate an understanding of social science methodologies in order to explain the consequences of human actions.

Along with my art classes in high school, I took an interest in History. South Piedmont has also helped me to expand my knowledge of History and other human experiences. I could improve my understanding of humanity with classes such as History, Psychology, and Political Science. Specifically, through my American History Midterm, I gained a deeper understanding of the impact of wars. This assignment challenged me to prepare my paper with proper research to support the opinions I was imposing. From this assignment, I understood the consequences of actions regarding world wars. This was very impactful to me throughout the rest of my education at South Piedmont. I learned the importance of peace in the world and connected how warring comes about. I took the time to research the "fourteen points" by Woodrow Wilson and understand the beginning of the Spanish-American war. Both of these portions of the Midterm helped me to understand the importance of applying the root causes of the conflict to find a resolution in the beginning. This assignment is just another example of the way I indulge myself when it comes to writing. Through countless research papers, I have retained much of the education and lessons taught at South Piedmont. Specifically, within my History class, I was able to showcase my capabilities through curating accurate information and a deep understanding of the topic to portray a historical storyline. This is something that I am grateful to South Piedmont for, for each class has challenged me in a way where it has been for my benefit.
